A long interview with BoA celebrating her 20th anniversary Japan debut

 ——May 30, 2001, you made your debut in Japan at the young age of 14. Do you remember when you decided to make your debut in Japan?
BoA: It was a casual feeling, "Oh, I'm going now?"
Because I was young, I didn't feel that japan debut or going abroad was such a serious thing.
Now, for example, if I was told "You're going to America", I would feel pressured and start worrying.
At that time, my thought was simple.

——Did you feel happy like “wow I did it!”?
BoA: Rather than being happy, I couldn't speak Japanese like I do now, so I worried about the language.
I had been studying Japanese up until then, but after that I urgently increased the class time.

——What was your impression of Japan at that time?
BoA: I thought Japan was a flashy place. There're places that you can't often see overseas, such as the scrambled intersection in Shibuya. Also, the appearance of the youngsters back then, everybody had black skin and blonde hair like Yamanba Gal and Ganguro.
I thought, "I might be too white ..." (laughs).

——What was the hardest part of your activities when you started working in both Japan and South Korea?
BoA: It's the airplane trips. I'm grateful that there was no time difference, but I had to fly out on the first flight in the morning and fly back on the last flight. It was tiring because even though the distance was short but the number of flights I took was a lot.

——When did you feel the difference in culture between Japan and South Korea?
BoA: What surprised me most was touring the CD shops (* for promotion). I did it for the first time in Japan.
At that time, I went to Tower Records, HMV, TSUTAYA, etc. and thought the places were so big.
Also, the rental shop was new experience for me. There was no such store in Korea.

——How was song recording in Japanese when you first made your debut?
BoA: At first, it was difficult to pronounce Japanese Ta and Za lines. (* namely the ta, chi, tsu, te, to, za, zu, ze, zo sounds)

——How did you remember the Japanese lyrics?
BoA: First, I write in Hangul and remember the contents. I've been able to read hiragana and katakana since that time, so I only asked them to add furigana (* small characters added to guide pronunciation) ​​to the kanji (* chinese characters in jpn language).
I would sing while reading it. Also, the small Japanese "tsu" may or may not be stretched depending on the song, so it was difficult at first.

——Now you can read kanji. It's easier to understand the meaning if it's written in kanji, isn't it? (* as opposed to writing in only hiragana/katakana)
BoA: That's right. In some cases, Kanji's are easier to read.
If only written in hiragana, it may be difficult to understand where to cut the sentence.
However, even now, I still have my staff add furigana ​​for me (laughs).

——By the way, what was the first Japanese you learned when you made your debut?
BoA: "Mr. Tanaka, where is your business trip destination?" (Laughs).
The names that appear most in the text are Mr. Tanaka for Japanese, and Mr. Kim for Korean. It's also the name of my staff. I learned Business Japanese first. Words like "Business trip", "Meeting", "Please take the call".

—— “otsukaresamadesu (Thank you for your hard work)”?
BoA: That's right. "Thank you for your hard work. Today's meeting was wonderful" (laughs).

——What a sentence for a 14-year old (laughs)!
BoA: But that was good. All the people I'd meet in Japan at work would be older, so they taught me formal Japanese, not casual Japanese. Even during interviews, people would praise me that my Japanese is proper.

——In 2003, you held the first tour “BoA FIRST LIVE TOUR 2003 ～ VALENTI ～”. The final performance was at a large venue called Yoyogi National Stadium Daiichi Gymnasium. Do you remember that time?
BoA: Actually, I don't remember much. It was my first tour, all in Japanese, and I was doing my best to perform, so I couldn't remember the sight in front of me. Which is sad. Whenever I see the video footage, I'd regret "Wow, it's amazing. Why don't you remember this?"

——Are there any songs that left an impression on you in your music activities in Japan?
BoA: "LISTEN TO MY HEART". It was the first song to be ranked in the top of the Oricon chart (5th), so I was surprised and very happy. Also, what I really think about these days is "Meri Kuri". It's been over 15 years ago, but I'm grateful to hear that it still plays in the city in winter.

——What kind of song is “Meri Kuri” to you?
BoA: It's a song that I like from the start, a beautiful song with nice lyrics. I'm very happy that everyone loved it and listened to it for such a long time. It's a Japanese song sung by a foreign singer that became a classic winter song in Japan. As a singer, I'm proud that my song is played in the streets during the season in a country where I wasn't even born in.

——Looking back, you often cry at live performances of “Meri Kuri”.
BoA: The melody is bright but painful. Especially because of its positivity, there is a sadness that touches our hearts. Rather than sad tears, it's more like happy agony, so I'm moved to the point of tears when I sing it.

——You cried during “Meri Kuri” at the encore of the 10th anniversary live “BoA THE LIVE 2011“ X'mas ”~ The 10th Anniversary Edition”. After that, when you re-sung for the DVD, you were also crying.
BoA: The first time I cried, thinking "I'm so happy. I'm never gonna be this happy again." and in the end I couldn't sing.
Then the staff told me to sing again for DVD footage. The second time I cried was tears of frustration (laughs).

——Are there any JP music videos that left a strong impression on you?
BoA: It's "Meri Kuri". People see the snow that falls in the MV and they'd ask "It's CG, right?", but actually it's real snow.
It was the first snow of Tomamu (* MV location) that year, and it suddenly started to fall like a miracle. The MV itself is beautiful and memorable.
The morning after the shooting, the scenery seen from my room's window was really beautiful.
White snow with no footprints that no one has stepped on yet. I still remember that landscape to this day.

——There are many music videos shot overseas, but do you have any particular location you remember?
BoA: I remember "KEY OF HEART" in the sense that I had a hard time.
We shot it in Los Angeles, but it's really hard to dance in those heel boots in the desert. My knees hurt so bad (laughs).
I remember how hard it was to film whenever I see the MV (laughs).

——So, are there any albums that left a special impression on you?
BoA: Each album has its own memories, from the first album "LISTEN TO MY HEART" to the latest "Watashi konomamade iinokana".

——The 7th album “IDENTITY” released in 2010 in which you wrote 6 songs / composed 4 songs, seems like it became a foothold for your self-produced career after that.
BoA: I remember that "IDENTITY" was the most difficult to produce due to various challenges.
I myself wasn't used to creating songs yet at the time, so I felt like I was learning how to write and compose songs while working on it.

——After the 10th anniversary, you have more opportunities to write and compose your own songs, including “Only One”. Please tell us what you are conscious of when writing songs.
BoA: I think the staff can create both the tune and lyrics in the style that people want BoA to sing.
That's why, when it comes to the songs I write, I try to write the tune and messages that I want to do and convey.
There is a gap between the two, but I put the highest priority on it. (* I think she meant she tried to balance both styles)

——What do you pay most attention to when writing lyrics?
BoA: It's a story flow. I want everyone to listen to the song and can relate to his/her own experiences.

——BoA has sung many songs with Korean and Japanese versions, including “Only One”. What is the difference between Korean lyrics and Japanese lyrics?
BoA: I think there is a difference in expression. Sometimes I think it's a cultural difference. Korean lyrics are more straightforward. Japanese lyrics tend to convey in a roundabout way using metaphors.

——When do you usually get the words and melody when you work on a song?
BoA: I'm not the type that have ideas all the times. I'm the type that turns to desk and work only when it comes to "Deadline! No way! I can't make it in time!"  (laughs).

——What time do you write songs?
BoA: Basically, I don't do it at night. If I decide that today is the day to work, I'd start in the morning and work until 9 or 10 pm. For the latest Korean album "BETTER" released last year, I wrote 4 songs / composed 3 songs. I worked on it from around noon to evening. I work when everyone works and play when everyone plays. That's how I concentrate on work.
 
——The live series “BoA THE LIVE” that started in 2006 has been branded and has become synonymous with BoA. What does live mean to BoA?
BoA: Recently, my passion for live performances has become very strong. Especially in the last two years, I haven't been able to perform live at all due to the corona, so I've come to realize how important live concerts are. It's the only place where fans and I can spend the same time in the same place. I used to think that live performances were part of my work, so it was common to hold concerts.
But now things are no longer the norm. I thought that I should cherish live concerts more and more from now on.

——What do you take great care of when you do concerts?
BoA: The quality of the set list. I think that will lead to the quality of the concert itself.
If I look at the setlist and find it boring, honestly, I think the fans will find it boring as well.

——Has the way you create setlists changed?
BoA: Before, I didn't really like singing old songs. However, when I go to concerts by other artists, I sometimes wonder "Why!?" if they don't sing the hit songs I wanted to hear (laughs).
I'm sure that all the fans who come to my concert feel the same way too, so I try to put old songs that I didn't sing much in the set list.

——What do you want to express and challenge for BoA, who is celebrating 20th anniversary?
BoA: Recently, I'm a judge for a program called "STREET WOMAN FIGHTER" in Korea. It's a program in which female dancers compete by dancing, and it has had a very positive influence on me regarding dance. So I want to put out a dance song. I would like to try a dance-focused song with a heavy beat to go with a cool dance.
 
——How did you spend your time during your stay at home due to Corona?
BoA: I cooked and ate at home. I couldn't go to Japan, so I cooked and ate Japanese food.
I like soba, so I boiled soba, bought soup, wasabi, grated radish and ate it. Also, last year I did more running outside. There are parks on both sides of the Han River in South Korea, and I ran nearly 10 kilometers every day. But I ran too much and lost a lot of weight last year. It's not good to be too thin, so I'm trying to gain weight this year.

——Are there any music-related changes?
BoA: I naturally have untact (* it's a made-up word in Korea. un+contact) lifestyle, so I don't have a hard time not being able to meet people.
I've always worn masks to care for my throat, so I don't feel inconvenienced, but the stress of not being able to go abroad or meeting my fans has made many of my songs quite dark. Naturally, that kind of influence is reflected in the songwriting, and the lyrics are getting darker.

——What kind of changes do you feel in music production and recording?
BoA: When I recorded remotely, it felt strange as if I became an avatar. However, I think that we will get used to working this way from now on, or should I say that eventually, the era where remote recording will be the norm is coming.

——It is becoming common to make music by sending data back and forth.
BoA: Online recording has a strange feeling different from just sending data.
When I think that someone in Japan is watching and listening to the song I'm singing right now, it feels like I'm being peeped. (* she meant mondo grosso? LOL)
Like now we're conducting interview remotely and people can see it from any country.(* You're wrong BoA. We don't see anything but text and a couple of photos.) It's a little scary and feel a little odd. I think I have to get used to it, but if possible I would like to go to Japan and record directly in the studio.

——How has your attitude toward music changed over the last 20 years?
BoA: In the past, I used to get songs from lyricists and composers and sing songs that the staff would choose, but now even though I'm not at the level of producer, but it's an environment where I can express my own opinions. I feel like we're making it together from scratch.

——The environment surrounding music has changed significantly in the last 20 years, with the means of listening to music changing from CDs to streaming/digital distribution. What are your thoughts on that point?
BoA: I feel a little lonely or sad after changing from CD to digital distribution.
I have experience with both analog and digital, and CD albums were precious in the past. It was meaningful to buy an album and listen to it while reading the lyrics card. Instead, with the increase in digital music, music has become instant, and I feel that each song is getting more casual.
On the other hand, the good thing about digital is that you can challenge various kind of songs and release them immediately, so you have more opportunities to try new things and have an adventure. Another advantage is that you can easily listen to songs released in any country.

——You have been unable to come to Japan for a long time. What do you want to do when you come to Japan?
BoA: I want to go eat abura soba! That is the highest priority (laughs). Of course, I also want to do live concert in front of the fans!

——The new song “My Dear” to be released on November 5th is the first release in about a year. How did you feel when you listened to the song?
BoA: I thought it was a simple and easy-to-listen sound. But since the main synth has unique characteristic, I think it's a song that will remain in your ears.

——What does “My Dear” in the lyrics mean?
BoA: All the fans who have supported me so far.
This song is my message song to all the fans. If I could hold a live concert, I would have released a performance-centric song because it was the 20th anniversary. But as things are, I think we still spend a lot of time at home, so I released a song that everyone can listen to comfortably at home. I thought that everyone could be healed listening to it, so I decided to release this song.

——The lyrics include words that are reminiscent of BoA's past songs.
BoA: "Denim", "Only One", "dakishimete", and so on, I think fans will notice. Also, I think that my personality, which only fans know, is expressed in the lyrics. I think they would laugh while listen. (* wrong! we cried!)

——What is your favorite phrase in the lyrics of “My Dear”?
BoA: The chorus. 'I look strong, but I'm not, but even so, pls stay by my side.'
It's a fairly straightforward phrase, and I really think it's so me. When you hear "BoA", many people may think of a strong person who dance powerfully but actually she is not so strong, just a woman who tried hard to live (laughs).
I was happy that I was properly expressed in the lyrics.

—— “My Dear” was the first birthday release in a 20-year career.
BoA: I'm happy and I think it was a meaningful release. But I don't really care about that kind of thing... I'm sorry I couldn't make a nice comment. I'm not such a romantic person (laughs).

——Finally, do you have a message for Japanese fans?
BoA: Thank you for supporting me on the 20th anniversary. I don't really feel like an anniversary year because I can't do much because of the corona, but this is not the end of my activities. This is just a passing point and I will continue to do my best in the future, so please support me! 
Let's overcome the corona wreck and meet again in Japan in good spirits! I want to go to Japan soon!

In an industry where the life span of one’s career, along with fame and recognition, can be as ephemeral as seasonal fashion trends, BoA, one of Korea’s pioneering popstars, is seemingly eternal.

At just 32 years old, it is hard to wrap one’s head around the fact that South Korean singer- songwriter BoA’s 19-year career is older than many of the Generation Z youths, the ones who fill the concert stadiums of other newly minted K-Pop stars. Most 20- and 30-somethings would recall her omnipresence during the early aughts; from picking out her albums at HMV and bobbing to its dance-pop tracks on a silver Discman, to her stage name (a stylised abbreviation of her first name, of which both are enunciated in the same manner) often being uttered in the same breath as fellow turn-of-the-millennium rising stars Ayumi Hamasaki and Jay Chou when asked about one’s favourite musician.

Today, going by the metre that is the power and prevalence of K-Pop (and K-Beauty, and K-Drama) in global culture, the monumental depth of her imprint might be unintentionally dwarfed. Idol groups such as GIRLS’ GENERATION and SUPER JUNIOR that collectively dismantled geographical borders for K-Pop in the last decade — paving the way for current bands like BTS and Blackpink to reach even the furthest-flung corners of the world — tend to overshadow BoA’s feat as a solo Korean pop act. One that commanded Asia’s attention, without the reach of social media, nearly two decades ago.

Like the letting up of a downpour the moment you’re due out the door, or the train arriving just as you set foot onto the platform, her beginnings in the music industry can be considered a happy coincidence. BoA had followed her older brother to a talent competition organised by SM Entertainment in 1998 and in the process, ended up getting signed on herself. Two years later, at just 13 years old, she released her first full-length album ID; Peace B. Although it wasn’t until the singer set her sights on Japan, that the “BoA effect” would realise its full potential.

With a new audience in mind, she released her first Japanese album Listen To My Heart shortly after the first, which topped the Oricon Albums Chart, Japan’s domestic equivalent of the Billboard Charts. Nominations and wins at the Japan Record Awards followed, along with recognition at South Korea’s own Mnet Asian Music Awards. Treading both genres of K-Pop and J-Pop subsequently, her succeeding releases would mark major milestones of her career — albums like Valenti (2003) and Best of Soul (2005) moved over a million copies in Japan — and fortify her popularity.

Then came the time when BoA ventured out of her comfort zone, Asia, making a move across the Atlantic. “When I was younger, becoming a singer was somewhat of an obscure dream. Something unrefined, and not well thought out. Now, it is the way I can give satisfaction to a bigger audience, and create greater expectations,” she says. This was between 2008 to 2010, and while her American takeover was brief, it was during this time that she left an indelible mark on Korean music history; alongside Wonder Girls, she became the first Korean pop act to make it onto the Billboard Charts.

The recent years have seen her fill bigger shoes in the music industry, lending her expertise to aspiring acts as a judge on singing competitions. But at the same time, she’s still keeping score, and tirelessly augmenting an already prolific repertoire with a constant flow of fresh music. “Music can be healing for some people and it can give energy to others. It can also be a way to share and heal one’s pain. Through this, I also feel the emotions they feel when listening to my music, which is a large part of why I find music so charming,” BoA muses, on her dedication to the craft.

The eponymous single of BoA’s latest album, Woman, sees her proclaiming in that ever so slightly sultry voice of hers that she’s beautiful, stylish and modern — just the way she is. It’s an ode not unlike a Bruno Mars anthem, but the lyrics are self-penned and of course, in reference to herself. As the song starts off with the sound of high heels clicking against the floor, its strides purposeful, one can’t help but think it’s as if BoA has only just arrived. Even 19 years on.

You’ve been in the music industry for a long time now. What do you think is music’s greatest appeal?

Music can be healing for some people and it can give energy to others. It can also be a way to share and heal one’s pain. Through this, I also feel the emotions they feel when listening to my music, which is a large part of why I find music so charming.

And what does it mean to you?

Music, without doubt or hesitation, goes hand in hand with my life.

How has your perspective towards being a singer evolved?

When I was younger, becoming a singer was somewhat of an obscure dream. Something unrefined, and not well thought out. Now, it is the way I can give satisfaction to a bigger audience, and create greater expectations.

How do you hope your fans perceive your music?

I always tell my fans that they are friends who I share my time with. I hope that my music, and me as a person, can play the same role to them.

Fashion and style play a huge part in music, and to you as well. Why do you think it’s important?

You can tell the personality and character of a person by the way they are dressed. For example, my professional persona has to show the type of music I’m about in a single photo.

How does your personal style differ from that of your professional persona?

My style as BoA changes a lot depending on the songs. When it comes to just me, I tend to wear similar things consistently… And that’s workout pants (laughs).

What does having a healthy mind mean to you?

Living optimistically. I’ve been working for a long time now, and I often think [in the face of difficult situations], “This will pass.” I also try not to get angry, and to be understanding and more open-minded. When I realised that there is no one in the world that thinks and acts the same way as I do, everything became easier. Thinking negatively isn’t good for your mental and physical health.

What would you like to say to your past self?

I’d like to say, “Thank you very much.” Honestly, if you asked me to do everything I did in the past, I really don’t think I would be able to do so now. I had worked very hard, and I think I’ve lived that life to its fullest potential.

"Sukidayo -MY LOVE-" is a song about a woman who can't express her feeling to the guy she's in love with. It's a ballad perfect for when you're troubled by lack of courage or too much pride. AMOR is the exact opposite where the girl expresses her love straightforwardly and passionately. I'm an honest type so I'm more like in AMOR. But for every woman, I think we have a bit of both sides anyway.

- things found out after turning 30

Including what I notice from my friends, I think we're at a time where there're a lot of things to worry about, be it career, marriage or children. But recently I noticed that these worries would continue on forever no matter how old we get. Life is a series of choices and it changes according to the paths we've taken. We have to battle with these choices forever.

- how did you make choices til now?

I've always picked the choice I possibly won't regret myself. If someone else decided for me and it failed I'd have regretted it "What if I chose the other choice...?" But if I chose it myself and it failed, at least I learnt something from it. I can upgrade myself from the experience.

- You said that the first few years after debut, you were so busy you barely remembered anything. Now what do you cherish the most?

Time for myself. There's always time for the company, time for family,... but come to think of it, I have very little time for myself. So I try to spend time for my own happiness too, not only for others. It's an ordinary thing but is always forgotten. I try to take good care of, not only artist BoA, but also human BoA as well.

- Your recent happiness is golf.

I started playing golf because people invited me to but then I got crazy about it. I play 2-3 times monthly. Golfing gives me time away from work and makes me relaxed. Days that I play well, my work also goes well. Actually I came up with a part of "Sukidayo -MY LOVE-" melody in the car back from golfing. *laugh*

DJ: It's been 3 years since WHO'S BACK, your last release. What have you been doing til now?
BoA: For this new album, Watashi Konomamade Iinokana, we didn't set the deadline so we've been recording songs with no rush. I flew in a lot of times to record songs in Japan. I've also released an album in Korea and had acting jobs.

DJ: It took 3 years to complete this album. What kind of effect does it have on the album?
BoA: Since we had a lot of time, we had more fun choosing from different genres. Lyrics-wise too, we could afford to look for the ones that we want so from many factors, we were able to make a higher quality album.

DJ: The album will be released on Valentine's Day. With the title "Watashi Konomamade Iinokana (Am I Ok like this?)". Can you elaborate?
BoA: *LOL* I found it intriguing that it was picked as the title song. It was unexpected to me. When I heard of the decision I immediately asked why? Turned out women in their 20's-40's can identify with this song. My female staff members were saying "This is me. This is my life." Actually for me too, I'm at the age where I have love and career problems too.

DJ: Actually, I'm the same age as you. and it's true. Once we turn 30, maybe we still enjoy work but there're people who started having kids, having families so it is a period in life where there are a lot of changes so one needs to reflect on life. What about you?
BoA: For me, between work and love/marriage, I'd still choose work. Work is fun. I don't get bored. So I think I'm ok this way.

DJ: I'd like to talk about Jazzclub, another song from the new album. It sounds refreshing but also sounds like your style. It has an MV too, right?
BoA: The MV was filmed in New York. I only had two days for rehearsal before filming.

DJ: Only two days?
BoA: Actually only 3 hours each day. On the first day, I learnt my part. On the 2nd day, I rehearsed with the full dancer team and filmed the MV on the 3rd day.

DJ: There's an acting part at the beginning too with the taxi scene so you got to use acting skills that you've learned as an actor.
BoA: Personally, it was embarrassing for me. Out of the blue this guy told me he was gonna get married via facetime. *lol* after that I went into a club and started dancing. It was like a flashmob and I got to feel like a queen. *lol* It was fun.

DJ: The MV director is Benny Boom? How did he get to work on it?
BoA: We didn't know each other before. He is a film and TV show director. That's why he's good at storytelling and the MV felt like a short movie.

DJ: What's Valentine's Day like in Korea? Is it fun and festive like in Japan?
BoA: yeah it's loads of fun ... for couples. But that's true for Japan too.

DJ: Girls give chocolate to guys?
BoA: Yes, same as in Japan. But I've never made chocolate for anyone.

DJ: Buy and get it over with?
BoA: Yes

DJ: What do you think of girls confessing their feelings on Valentines Day?
BoA: I think it's wonderful. Wonderful for those who can do it.

DJ: Are you the type that can confess?
BoA: No. The thing is I can't make chocolates.

DJ: That's the problem (not the confession)?
BoA: That's the most important point in all of this.

DJ: Then I think the CD might be good as Valentines Day present.
BoA: Yes

Looking back to 2002

BoA: 2002 is when I was very busy in both Japan and Korea. In Japan, I released Listen to My Heart and Valenti. In Korea, I released an album called No.1 which received a lot of love from people.

Anything you specially remember?

BoA: I received two grand awards from No.1. It was an honor and would leave such an impression for any singer's career.

BoA: I didn't imagine the song would have such longevity. For merikuri, what I can remember the most is singing live on building rooftop in Korea for FNS kayousai. It was so cold I wondered "Are we doing it here for real?" I think merikuri has an image of lovers together in the night street thanks to this broadcast so I feel very grateful. I'd often hear people around me say 'hearing merikuri in the streets of Shibuya makes me realize year end is coming'. It's my pride as a singer having such a signature song.

Comparing to years ago, what have you improved?

BoA: My Japanese. I learnt JP while working, doing interviews and such. That's why I sound like a working adult.

*BoA said the word "(working) adult" wrong here. She said kaishajin instead of shakaijin. (kaishajin is not really a word.)

BoA: I understand the nuance and the lyrics a lot better. My Japanese has gotten a lot better even though it's awkward saying it myself. *acting all shy*

BoA: As for the differences between KR and JP lyrics, Korean lyrics tend to be more straightforward. But recently JP dance songs also have more straightforward lyrics.

BoA: It's a song women in 20's-40's can emphatize with. It's about various difficulties women face in life. Listeners probably think oh... I also have these doubts.


Any episode filming Jazzclub in New York?

BoA: I suddenly had to do rehearsal. Up to the point before flying off to New York, there was still no VDO for me to learn from. So I had this question in my mind all the time "What dance do I do?".
I had 3hr x 2day = 6hrs to complete the dance and was worried whether I could do it. But the song itself is relatively short and the choreographer made the dance moves flow smoothly so it was easy to learn so I did it.

Regarding the tour, any place that you specially look forward to?

BoA: I had concerts in Osaka and Nagoya many times but for others like Hokkaido and Aichi, I haven't been to much. Especially for Hokkaido, it'd be the first time since the first BoA The Live. With transparent skin and delicate body, her eyes are strong. Debuting at the age 13 with 17 years career, she's grown into a forever young but calm woman.

"Since I'm a solo artist and not in a group, I don't have anyone to rely on."

BoA, an artist from Korea who has branched out to Japan and the world, said with a smile. Not a smile to put up a brave front. I can feel the energy born from experiences of this woman who has just turned 30.

Japan debut with no interpreter

Her debut happened by chance. She followed her brother to an audition when she was 12 and was scouted by a big entertainment firm.

Debut in Korea was at the age of 13 in year 2000 and it was decided from way before that she'd advance to Japan market so she did a short homestay in Japan to learn Japanese. The day after Japan debut, she had to do interview in Japanese.

She couldn't say the things she wanted to say. It was in an era where Korean artists still didn't promote all over the world so there was no system, no interpreter.

"It's very difficult to express yourself in a foreign language. It's exhausting..."

When I throw her a question, she'd answer promptly. I can feel how smart she is but from her standpoint, it's still not her mother tongue. During her early days in Japan, she always had electronic dictionary close by her side, earnestly studying Japanese everyday.

Not long after she's come to Japan, she wrote lyrics in Japanese to a song.

Not knowing Kanji, she wrote her thoughts in Hiragana.
Only the word "tears" is written in Kanji.
14 years old girl who lived apart from her family, even when bathed in spotlight and showing smiles to fans, she still had conflicts inside.

Success brought by stoicness

Her career in Japan is full of records.
The first Korean artist to hold arena tour in Japan.
The youngest foreign artist to perform in Kouhaku in 2002. Her Kouhaku attendance continued after that for 6 consecutive years.
6 consecutive studio albums ranking first on Oricon Album Weekly Chart since debut. She was the 2nd female artist in history to hold the record.

Now not only the chart, but she became an artist and a producer who feels the sense of joy and accomplishment by delivering better music for the audience.

Even during costume and makeup change for the interview, she kept practicing filling the studio with the volume of her voice. Stoic through and through.

BoA continued challenging herself by debuting in the US with "Eat You Up" in 2008. Holding a big success in Japan, she started all over again on a new ground.

"I've learnt a lot. Things are difficult as much as you think they are. If you think it'd be alright, then the world looks much brighter."

BoA spoke calmly of the difficulties she's faced.

In 2014, she made a Hollywood debut by starring lead role in the movie "Make Your Move". Last year she worked as an MC in a huge audition TV show "Produce 101 Season 2".

BoA who keeps running on gorgeous path and might even appear as one with no hesitation. In her album set to release on Feb 14, there's a song that expresses what's deep in her mind.

The new album "Watashi Konomamade Iinokana" concept is "choices in adult female's life".

One day, I found that

"I thought I'd definitely be married by the age of 30. But marriage is not that easy."

"But I still enjoy my work so I have no choice but to put my work as first priority. After turning 30, there's no need to hurry anymore. I've strangely turned philosophical."

"Career, Marriage, Relationship" the main life choices women in their 30's face. BoA also has problems her peers have.

"When I was in my 10's or 20's, I can work even after pulling an all nighter but after turning 30, the fatigue and lack of sleep rapidly shows on my face. Skin also turned dry and sometimes I need to get IV drips. As a person who needs to present myself in front of people, I have to strictly secure my sleep time. (LOL)"

Even though she has transformed into a woman, but sometimes she'd laugh until her face got crumpled. From frank words to private stories, one can see an adolescent side of her still remained from her debut time.

"Comparing oneself to others is meaningless."

Standing alone on stage for 17 years. Where does that power come from?

"I don't compare myself to others. Compare for what? To feel jealous when you see things you don't have? That's negative thinking. Or to feel superior to others? That's just self gratification."

"I think comparing oneself to others and, even unconsciously, feel superior or inferior is the beginning to losing self confidence."

Message to her peers "Take good care of your own happiness" 

There is no trace of the girl who came to Japan alone and fought with loneliness and pain by herself anymore.

"As a human being, I cherish my happiness. Whenever I get caught up living a busy life, whether in the past or even now, I'd always search for what would help me spiritually. Recently it's exercising outdoor. Usually my job is indoor working in studio and I've only discovered recently that moving about in the nature really feels good."

She said with a natural smile.

Having spent her teenage years in a different way from others but found herself having the same problems with women her own age.

I asked her for a message for her peers.

"I want everyone to think that no matter what choice they make, it's a step toward a life that they can be happy with."

Q: You wear different sneakers every time. How many pairs do you have?

Q: What's your fav track off the new album?
A: I like all of them that's why I chose them for the album. I filmed Jazzclub MV in New York so I have many fun memories for the song but I love all of them.

Q: What's your recent hobby?
A: Last year I was into golf but since it's too cold now I'm having a break from it.

Q: You've said before that you like the word "zeitaku(luxury)" in Japanese. What's your zeitaku now?
A: A holiday. (It means she's so tired she needed a break.)

A: Hirai Ken. People say both of us have sad singing voices so I wanna collab on a sad song.

-- What's the album concept?
BoA: I'm 31 years old and all the songs in this album have the same theme that is 'choice' of women my age. People make choices all the time in life, but at the age 30, you have a certain amount of experiences and already have settled somewhat. But you also question yourself "Is it ok to settle like this already?" By the way, a lot of female staff around me can relate to the song name "Am I ok like this?"  LOL

-- Younger female listeners might find it depressing but for those who have worked for a while, it'd be different.
BoA: Exactly. When you have problems with love, work, and life, there are times when you worry "Am I ok like this?". But that's a worry to shape your life in a positive way. From now on, we will make a lot of decisions and change ourselves. I think the album title is a perfect fit to represent the songs in this album.

-- It's been 3.5 years since last album release.
BoA: Actually, this is the first time that we didn't set a release date in advance. This time, when we have a good song, we work on recording the song one by one. We can work to meet the deadline like we used to of course but since this is the 1st album in my thirties, I want high quality in both song selection and recording.

-- What is a "good song" that BoA should sing in her thirties?
BoA: First of all, I have this "BoA" brand which isn't limited to any certain genre. Whatever genre it is, when BoA expresses it, it becomes BoA. That's what I think I should do. For example, I've always like new jack swing but never tried it. When we did Jazzclub, I was personally very happy. New Jack Swing is the sound of around my birth year. We add trap, a currently popular genre, to it and the result is fun.

-- The MV was released around the end of last year, right? I thought it'd be the album lead track.
BoA: That'd be the case if this was a Korean release. Korean people love up tempo dance track. In Japan, ballads are better received. It might be difference in taste of the 2 nations but personally, I'm grateful of the difference (LOL). For me, I think Japanese language makes ballads sound more beautiful. On the contrary, Korean language has jumps and punches, making it easier to go with the rhythm. These language characteristics might play a role in all this too.

-- You work in Korea, Japan and the US. Are your 'BoA' brand different in these markets?
BoA: Not at all. I did Instagram live the other day. As soon as I started, the vdo is broadcasted to the whole world. It's a borderless age now. There's no point to changing style for each country. I should focus on delivering good performances instead. Now K-POP is popular internationally. They put importance in producing high quality MVs since they are viewed everywhere on earth. I respect the way Japan still cherishes CD culture but from how MV can't be viewed from outside Japan, I think there are some parts where Japan are still not open.

-- You participated on Produce 101 season 2 in Korea last year.
BoA: Seems like many have watched it from Japan. I've got asked a lot about it when I do interviews in Japan.

-- Wanna One is also popular in Japan
BoA: I feel accomplished when they were formed. But I'd like to stay away from producing for now (bitter laugh). It's tiring since I'm also an artist, having to see trainee eliminated one by one is really sad.

-- Your career must be helpful for judging, discovering new talents
BoA: Unlike other judges, I view from a performer standpoint. I also ask the contestants' trainer to expand their strengths. If you look at the program schedule, there's really no time to fix their weakness. So I thought of how to present the contestants in good performance given such a short preparation time. After debut, there would be even less time to practice. So I tried to give them advice from my experience on how to perfect the performance within such constraints.

-- Do you still give advices to Wanna One now?
BoA: No. They are standing on their own feet now. They have to go through trials and errors to grow themselves. I focus on my own performance. But one member of Wanna One goes to the same gym I frequent. So when I find him kinda slacking on TV performance I'd call him out (LOL).

-- You disapprove of others not giving their all while performing. Is it because you have your own philosophy as an artist?
BoA: Artists have to perform the same song hundreds of times. So some might forget the fact that some in the audience might see today performance for the first time. I can't approve of that. I should have focus on my own performance but Wanna One is not a stranger to me, so I can't help but say something.

-- A lot of juniors must want to learn from your experience. Aren't you interested in producing?
BoA: I get that kind of request from time to time but I can't do many things at the same time so I don't consider producing now. I've just turned 30, so I want to pour everything I have to singing&dancing. When I try a new genre, I find "Oh I can sing like this too.". When the trend changes, I would meet a new sound. The sense of accomplishment when I finish a song I find challenging. The list goes on and on and that's why I strongly want to continue this line of work.

-- You still aim high.
BoA: Of course. That's because one day physically I won't be able to perform anymore. Things we can't fight like old age, we just have to accept. When the time comes, I won't ask to perform like I was in my twenties. It might be a good idea to use my experience and start producing then. But for now, I still want to sing and dance.

- Actually I bought more mens than ladies UT. Since I wear skinny jeans a lot, if both top and bottom are tight, I would look small. So I prefer wearing loose top.

BoA: If I went with a public friendly song, it'd be too predictable. But I do have Who Are You pre-release for public friendly song. KML is a genre that I wanna try and it's more suitable for performing.

BoA: Before album release, I've been really worried because it's the first time I produced all the songs and I don't know if others would like the songs that I like or not. I couldn't even sleep.

BoA: But the feedback is very good so far. If I knew the feedback would be this good, I would have made it a monthly release. Releasing a song a month. LOL

DJ: How do you feel having Who Are You competing as no.1 candidate in music show instead of KML?
BoA: Well, KML maybe too hard of a genre for people but they are all my babies so I'm happy in a strange kind of way. LOL
Being no.1 certainly is important but I'd like it if people can listen from the first track to the 12th track.
Charting is important but for now, I've worked hard for this album so I wish it could become a good memory or a present for listeners. I wish many people can listen to it. I'd like to thank the management and those who helped working on the album.

DJ: KML is addicting. It's a song to listen to at night.
BoA: When I first heard the track, "come and kiss my lips" automatically popped up in my head. I asked for the track, went home, made the melody & demo and people like what they hear when I let them listen to my demo.
There're many candidates for the title song. There was this idea to make them all title tracks but it'd be too divided so KML was picked.
Actually for this song, I don't know where the chorus is. I asked my fans and they all gave different answers. When I was writing KML, instead of verse A B chorus like usual songwriting, I wrote it as part A B C D. It also underwent mixing/mastering for 26 times!

They briefly talked about BoA love for gag show and how she did it in front of fans during music show pre-recording. BoA did it here again when the DJ kept asking her to do it.

DJ: Please smile/laugh more. You look very pretty when you do so.

DJ: Why did you choose fox, green light, and smash to perform on music shows together with KML?
BoA: They were title track candidates. I think the most public friendly tracks are fox and green light. I wanna show a stage with more girly, feminine side of me.

BoA and Gaeko recorded Who Are You separately. BoA thanked gaeko for making the song more refined. About appearing only briefly in the MV, BoA said she wanted people to focus on the music so they went with story concept where she only appeared as a cameo.

Talking about her title (not exactly, the words the media use to describe her), BoA said since she's been called Star of Asia so long, she's comfortable with it the most (and also joked that it didn't mean much to her now since it's overused)

Talking about Smash, BoA said her dancers had it tough and that the song was made in summer and has funky sound with guitar+bass that she likes so much.

BoA said she wanted to do variety shows, especially outdoor ones but no offer to her. LOL

Speaking of Running Man, it was too cold when they were filming. She's confident she can do better in current weather.

In preparing for her comeback, BoA studied what other artists were doing
and saw Eddie Kim on TV and liked his voice so much. She thanked Eddie for making the song sweeter.

DJ: Eddie is very good at making music and playing acoustic guitar.
BoA: I really like guys who can play guitar well.

BoA said she wanna meet Eddie (they recorded Double Jack separately). DJ said BoA and Eddie should collaborate again. Maybe an acoustic song.

DJ: If you have a bf, what u wanna do?
BoA: Nothing in particular. I just want a person who can communicate well with me, who I'm comfortable with, and will take my side.
DJ: Didn't you say you like Yoo Ah In before? What about now?

BoA: It's a song that vocalist can get praise from. As I faced difficult times working on this album, the lyrics in this song are what I want to hear myself.

BoA: The elements of contrabass, strings, and electric violin in this song. I wanted to make a mysterious feeling song.

DJ: Won't u perform this on stage?
BoA: It was supposed to be a single cut but it just ended up being an album song. (BoA sounds frustrated here. I kinda doubt her authority as a producer for this album. SM can force her, the producer, to do anything or what?)

BoA: I can't do ballroom dance and this song requires a couple dance. Initially I named this song "taeyeop inhyung (wind-up doll)" but SM wanted all track titles in English and I was forced to change the title to Clockwork. The idea is a wind up doll moving slower and slower and asks another doll who she's in love with to wind up her key so that she can continue dancing with him.

DJ: pls make MV for it! Talking about MV, Sehun and Taemin starring in your MVs was whose decision?

BoA: For Taemin, since he's my only one couple dance partner who matched me well and Disturbance followed Only One in (Here I AM) concert so Taemin would be a good choice. For Sehun, it's the MV director who decided.

DJ: Who in SM would be good as a tango dance partner for Clockwork.
BoA: For ballroom dance, I think it'd be nice to have a professional dancer who can lead me. I got to dance with a pro ballroom dancer in MYM movie and it was amazing how he twirled me.

BoA: Since I work as an entertainer from a young age, I've heard a lot of hurtful words. Non entertainers also experience this kind of thing. Reckless words can hurt people so I wanted to make a song talking about this problem. I purposely made the melody happy in contrary to the message.

141201 NTV PON buzzword guess

BoA guested on the show in the morning and the buzzword of the year award was to be announced in the evening that day.

They basically introduced some of the nominations to BoA and let her guess which one would take the award. :)

Before that, they asked the nature of her stay in Japan to which BoA replied she came to Japan frequently but her stays are shorter than before. Average 2 times a month, 2-3 days per visit. There are some months where she visits more frequently. Since her stays are short, she doesn't know much of what goes on in Japan.

The Buzzwords they introduced to BoA
- Rerigo: BoA guessed correctly that it was Let It Go (Frozen's OST) and asked why it was called Rerigo to which the host explained "Because we are bad at English" LOL

- Buzzword surrounding an Olympic-winning Ski Jump athlete: BoA couldn't guess this one. The answer is LEGEND. BoA, still confused, asked "Did he call himself a legend?" <- LOL The host then explained it's what the nation calls him.

- Scene from Yamapi movie: BoA got it right instantly "Kabedon! I only learned about it yesterday. My staff was talking about how kabedon is very popular now and I thought what kind of donburi it is."

*donburi=rice with topping for example: katsudon=rice with fried-pork cutlets on top. tendon=rice with tempura on top

*kabedon actually refers to the act of hitting the wall (to block the girl from moving away like Yamapi did in the movie clip) kabe=wall, don=the sound of hitting

- comedy duo Nippon Elekiter Rengou's phrase "dameyo, ...." : BoA got it right this time too! It's dameyo, damedame. BoA's only learned about it just a while ago during makeup from her staff. "Wow my staffs are really capable!" said genuinely impressed BoA. The host added that this phrase is speculated to win the award this year.

Looking at the list of 15 nominated buzzwords (selected from 50 in total), BoA quickly noticed LEGEND from earlier and they continued talking briefly about some other buzzwords on the list. In the end, BoA guessed LEGEND would win. (*Wrong. Actually "dameyo, damedame" wins)    

Then they showed a BoA MV collection clip. BoA talked about the same old story how she went back to Korea, not expected any success with L2MH, only to be called back since L2MH hit it big.

Then FLY introduction.
BoA: "I wrote/composed this song. The meaning is about cheering oneself, not plus or minus, but just as you are. The PV was shot in England for 2N4D and it was between Live Tour concerts too. So it was a bit hectic back then."

Since this is an open radio, fans were there for BoA and they managed to communicate with her through the glass wall! The fans asked her questions(like "Only One dance partner she perfered, Taemin or Eunhyuk?", "Nagoya good she likes better, Tebasaki(Fried chicken wings) or Hitsumabushi(Eel&rice eaten with style)?") by writing on a sketchbook and BoA lipped the answers back. There was this one time where she was too into interaction with the fans that she failed to properly answer the radio host. ^^;

BoA's question for the radio program today is "What do you like to start doing again after a long while?". Fans sent in the answers and the radio host read it one by one but not before hearing the answer from BoA herself first.

BoA: I've been thinking hard what to reply since all I've been doing is singing and dancing. LOL Then I thought I'd like to start learning piano again. My eldest brother is a pianist but actually my 2  brothers and I started piano at the same time. The 2nd bro quit first. Few months after, I followed suit. LOL Thinking back, it's such a shame I didn't keep at it. As a kid, I didn't like sitting still focusing at one thing for a long time.

BoA: umm... I saw and thought...no makeup (LOL) It isn't intentional to showcase my no makeup face but since it's to show the natural me producing the song so I went about as usual. I always record songs without makeup so the MV came out like that. Everyone seems to pay attention to the no makeup part.

- The reason to show your natural self?

BoA: It depends on songs. For Shout It Out, we went for cool image so the makeup was fierce. Both makeup and fashion are designed to fit each song.

- Reaction from people nearby?

BoA: They kept talking about no makeup until I wonder if it was a bad decision. (LOL)

BoA:I've performed Only One for one whole year so I clearly remember the feeling of lying on top on the guy dancers.

BoA:most impressive ballad in the AL is close to me. I feel good singing it. I like it and even ask for it to be mixed a certain way.

BoA:Song that's my turning point is Milestone. Since it's released for my 10thAnniv. I still remember filming the MV for it.

BoA: I really like electric piano sound so I'm very satisfied with how Only One and Baby You.. turned out.

BoA:I go to gym 3 times a week. Going more often than this means going everyday and I'd be too muscular. LOL

Q:Acting experience that can be applied to Live performance?
BoA:None since they are different things. Subtle vs. Big action

BoA:Once the tour was decided, I thought to myself "JP activities are really beginning" and my motivation boosted.

B: Yes it's a trendy electro tune. It reminded me of Zedd and Avicii on my first listen.

--How was it singing this song?
B: Most of the songs in the album have lots of chorus but First Time is the only song with no chorus. Since it uses auto-tune, the recording process is the most simple of them all.

--What's your recent first experience?
B:I'm learning how to use "Logic Pro X". I've been using the previous version (ver.9) but with X, all the keyboard shortcuts have changed. A little while ago, I had a study session with music producer Jeff Miyahara. LOL

1. FIRST TIME - The MV is documentary style showing recording session of the song and what we do during breaks. There's scene of me making quesdilla in the MV too. I hope it will be more fun listening to the song after watching the MV.

B: I don't get to walk on streets much anyway plus I've been rehearsing a lot lately. Sweating while having make-up on is not good for the skin.

B: When I got an email from the producer asking for my opinion on the title "WHO'S BACK", I thought it sounds strong and impactful suitable for the album.

B: Lately, I've participated more in song and album production, be it song selection or other stuff. This way, my affection for the song and album grows bigger.

A: What's the song you love most in the album?

B: Only One since it's a self composed/written song and including in Korea, I've been singing it for one whole year.
