[news] Korea JoongAng Daily news piece from NEGA DOLA & Keyword #BoA press conference

BoA is ready to show her true self : The singer feels more comfortable to give fans a look at her private life

Jan 29,2018

Singer BoA is back in town - this time not as a producer or an actress, but as a singer with her latest single “NEGA DOLA,” which will be released on Jan. 31. Along with her new song, BoA will star in reality show “Keyword#BoA” with SHINee member Key, who at one time was her number one fan in the singer’s official fan club.

From a fan’s point of view, Key will be assisting as well as filming BoA to show a more natural and humane side of the singer. Korea JoongAng Daily attended a press conference where she discussed her new song and her show on Friday.

The singer said that through “NEGA DOLA,” she wants to earn back the nickname “Girl Crush,” which she admitted that she seems to have lost over the past few years.

Nearly 19 years after she made her debut, the singer also said that she wants to continue enjoying music that suits her age, but also show a different side of her that the public has not seen yet.

“After listening to the song, I want people to think, ‘Does BoA usually do these kinds of songs?’ or ‘This feels like BoA, but it also has a new quality that I haven’t heard before.’”

“NEGA DOLA” is a hip-hop dance song with guitar & synth sounds. The singer helped write the lyrics, which tell the story of a woman who feels that she is going crazy because of her lover’s obsession over her.

The reality show starts off showing the singer’s preparations for her new mini album. For the first time, her fans will be able to take a glimpse at the perfectionist BoA’s process of getting ready for her comeback.

In a clip of the show on Naver’s streaming service V Live, Key said, “We all know that she is perfect on stage, but what fans don’t know is what she is like off-stage. It is her natural attitude that makes her really attractive, and as a fan, I want to show that side of her in this show.”

True to those words, BoA has always been hesitant to open up her private life to the public. The last time she gave a look into her life off-camera was in a documentary that was released 10 years ago.

However, the artist has been stepping out of the shadows and has been making appearances on various entertainment programs, such as the JTBC talk show, “Knowing Bros.” She is also planning to make an appearance on the MBC variety show “Weekly Idol.”

When asked about her seemingly sudden change of mind, she replied, “I guess I feel more comfortable about myself, maybe because I have aged.

“When I was younger, at a time when I received all kinds of criticism both online and offline, I thought that it was simply because everybody hated me. But now, I just let go of those thoughts, because now I know that I cannot force everyone to like me. Some will, and some won’t, but that doesn’t mean I have to hide. That kind of thinking made me feel comfortable, and it is part of the reason why I decided to do this show.”

After the start of the reality show, which premiered on Jan. 28 and will continue for the next seven weeks on the cable channel XtvN, BoA will release a new mini album at the end of February and hold a concert in Japan in March. Fans can see clips of the show online at Naver TV or on the V Live streaming service.

[news] Korea Herald news piece from NEGA DOLA & Keyword #BoA press conference

19 years on, BoA doesn’t want to be called ‘veteran singer’
By Hong Dam-young

  •
There are certain images that K-pop legend BoA, who has spent nearly 19 years in entertainment, keeps away from the public. Her seemingly confident and uptight image seems incompatible with letting loose. She was a “steadfast” musician who pioneered through the rugged K-pop world from the age of 13.

And in her upcoming single and first reality show, the veteran singer decided to unveil her true and different selves that weren’t always depicted in the media.

“As I got older, I got comfortable with revealing myself. In the past, I’ve feared a lot of things. I thought people just hated me, maybe because I was criticized a lot since I was young. Even when facing reporters like this, I just came to the conclusion, ‘They will hate me,’” said BoA on how she decided to open herself up through her new projects during a media conference for the new single “Nega Dola” and reality show “Keyword #BoA,” in Seoul on Friday.

"Nega Dola” reflects the singer’s new approach. In the hip-hop-based girl-power dance anthem, BoA becomes an empowered woman who can easily blow off a man obsessing over her. The aggressive song may even include some unpleasant lines for male listeners, the singer joked.

“Some may think it is weird of me to try this kind of music. I’ve been thinking of the kind of girl-power anthem, like my hit ‘Girls on Top,’ that fits my age, 32, and I thought ‘Nega Dola’ was a good fit,” she said.

She also explained the song was a result of her efforts to engage more in the public’s tastes for infectious catchphrases, while she had instead focused on quality in her previous works.

BoA also shared that shooting “Keyword #BoA” was a fresh experience for her. The show takes the form of a “rolecumentary,” to use program director Kim Dong-wook’s term, as Key of K-pop act SHINee, who considers BoA his “role model,” features as an observer who joins the songstress in sharing her daily life. In the down-to-earth show, BoA jokes, imbibes in a few drinks and talks about her loneliness as a superstar, in a more stripped-down way than ever before.

Director Kim, who accompanied BoA at the press event, said he decided to cast Key, BoA‘s longtime fan, in order to show her in a fresher perspective, one that doesn’t come from a program director or the artist herself.

BoA (S.M. Entertainment)

After almost 19 years, BoA is a born-to-be musician who appears the happiest onstage. Asked if she plans to nurture the next generation of K-pop stars or junior artists, as she had done as a mentor for the second season of “Produce 101,” the singer answered, “I don’t have any plans to nurture junior artists for now, and I think it’s too early for that.”

“I’m still in my early 30s, and I want to sing and dance on stage when I have energy. My joints are still fine. All of my experiences as a singer will be of good use long into the future, when I get old enough to finally train others,” She said. “Please don‘t call me a ‘veteran singer,’ I’m still young.”

BoA (S.M. Entertainment)

Having debuted under S.M. at age 13 with “ID; Peace B” in 2000, BoA continued her winning streak both in Korea and Japan with hits like “No. 1,” “Atlantis Princess,” “My Name” and “Hurricane Venus” and “Only One.” The high-profile singer also appeared in the second season of Mnet’s audition program “Produce 101” as a mentor from April to June last year.

“Keyword #BoA” aired its first episode Monday via Naver’s V Live and Naver TV. It will air every Sunday on TV channel XtvN from this week. After promoting her new single for the first time on Mnet’s “M!Countdown” on Thursday, BoA will embark on a Japanese tour in March.

BoA Big Match news articles

I'm sure there are more but I only saved these two articles, so keeping them here for future reference. :)

BoA Kickstarts Her Domestic Acting Career with “Big Match” to Positive Reviews

BoA Kickstarts Her Domestic Acting Career with “Big Match” to Positive Reviews
Singer BoA made her domestic screen debut with “Big Match” to positive reviews. Action films demand much more than just good acting from an actress, and BoA exceeded expectations with her professionalism.
In “Big Match,” BoA captured viewers with her fluency in the action scenes. She held her own as the only female actor in the action scenes, impressing viewers with her energy, power, and expressiveness.
BoA explained, “I have long received acting offers, but at the time I was so involved in my music that I could not seriously consider acting. However, afterparticipating in the Hollywood movie “Make Your Move,” I developed an interest in acting.”
She plays the role of the mysterious Soo Kyung who, under the orders of the Ace (Shin Ha Kyun), guides the protagonist Choi Ik Ho (Lee Jung Jae) to his next mission. To prepare for the role, BoA underwent special action training for five months before filming.
Lee Jung Jae commented, “I know of BoA as a singer who ever since she was little devoted herself to her craft. She has that in common with the character Soo Kyung. When BoA comes to set, you can tell she has practiced a lot. She is truly a professional.”
Meanwhile, “Big Match” has drawn a total of 724,803 viewers, as last recorded on December 3.

[Interview] BoA Talks Filming Action Scenes in Negative Degree Weather for ‘Big Match’
2014.11.30 15:00
BoA shared having filmed tough actions scenes without being treated like an actress.

BoA, who has entered her 14th year since her debut, signaled her new beginning. She took on the role of the mysterious red angel ‘Soo Kyung’ in the movie Big Match, guiding Choi Ik Ho (Lee Jung Jae) who tries to save his brother.

On November 25, BoA met with Newsen in a café in Samchung-dong and said, “Director Choi Ho apparently sent the scripts over to cast me when he was working on Go Go 70 but I never saw the scripts. I think there was a mistake with the company,” and added, “I met director Choi Ho for the first time and he encouraged me saying that he thinks I will do well. I told him that I enjoyed reading the scenario and that I want to take the role, even though it would be a difficult role for an actress. Then he asked me if I’m good at exercising and things like that and I ended up joining the movie.”
For BoA, the first filming for Big Match was a battle with the cold. BoA said, “On the first day of filming, I had to fight Lee Jung Jae at the field of reeds near Han river. I wasn’t embarrassed because I knew Lee Jung Jae sunbae from before. But it did feel different meeting him at the set as an actress.”

“Instead of feeling embarrassed by rolling on the field with Lee Jung Jae sunbaenim, I felt very cold. It was negative 17 degrees that day, the coldest day so far. The Han river was really cold. I can’t stand cold very well so I had a tough time. I didn’t receive any special treatment because I was an actress. Everyone just called me Soo Kyung and told me to act out all the action scenes. I got help in certain parts from a double but for the most part, I acted them out myself.”

About director Choi Ho’s praise claiming that she is like a stuntwoman, BoA said, “I practiced action for about three months. I checked my movements many times in front of the camera,” and added, “He always praised me on the set. He would also try to persuade me to take the action scenes without using a double. I would complain about it. Even for the scene where it only shows the back of me running, he said, ‘you can do this right?’ and wanted me to act it out myself.”
About looking thinner than usual in the movie, BoA said, “I probably look thinner towards the end of the movie. I didn’t weigh myself but most of the filming took place throughout the night. I think that’s why I lost more weight.”

To play as the former boxer, BoA reportedly maintained her well-defined abs throughout filming by watching her diet and practicing action scenes. But sadly, the scene that reveals BoA’s abs was cut out in the editing process.

When asked how she takes care of her health, BoA said, “I get cold very easily. So I tried taking oriental medicine but it was no use. It was good thing that I didn’t catch a cold or get sick during filming.”

Meanwhile, Big Match is a movie about fighter Choi Ik Ho (Lee Jung Jae) trying to save his brother Choi Young Ho (Lee Sung Min) from the genius villain Ace (Shin Ha Kyun). It stars Lee Jung Jae, Shin Ha Kyun, Lee Sung Min, BoA, Kim Eui Sung, Ra Mi Ran, Bae Sung Woo, Son Ho Jun, Choi Woo Shin and more and is set to premiere on November 26.

[130214 JoongAngIlBo] Following BoA’s feminine leadership

Feb 14,2013

Have you seen BoA lately? She’s been the object of my admiration for the past couple of months. She’s a judge on the TV audition show “K-Pop Star 2.” Along with fellow judges Yang Hyoun-seok and Park Jin-young, she picks contestants to add to her team. Then she trains them and they compete again to try to proceed to the next round.

[130125 JoongAngIlBo] BoA finally ready to headline at home

[ARTIST IN FOCUS] The Hallyu sensation will hold her first solo concerts for fans in Korea over the weekend
Jan 25,2013
BoA

BoA, often called a trailblazer for K-pop overseas, is set to make a splash at home. After 14 years and seven albums, she will make a solo performance in Korea for the first time this weekend. It may seem strange that the performer behind successful albums like “No. 1,” “My Name” and “Hurricane Venus” has yet to have the stage to herself at home, but the 27-year-old has been too busy making a name for Hallyu outside of the country.

First in Japan, she sold a million copies of “Listen to my Heart” and topped the Oricon chart. Then BoA moved into the larger American market, where she released “BoA” in 2009. She will make her Hollywood debut this year in the film “Cobu 3-D.”

And yet, despite her success overseas, the singer has longed to return the love she has received from local fans. To do so, she recently took a job as a judge on the singing-survival show “K-pop Star” and is also promoting “Only One,” her seventh album.

JoongAng Sunday interviewed the star at the offices of SM Entertainment in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul.

[120809] BoA Dishes on Her Debut, Shin Se Kyung and Being on an Island With U-Know Yunho

BoA recently dropped by KBS’ radio show Hong Jin Kyung’s 2 O’Clock as well as SBS’ Choi Hwa Jung’s Power Time where the singer candidly opened up on a wide range of topics about herself.

Reflecting on her long career full of many hits, BoA shared No.1TreeMy Name and Energetic as her best songs but however revealed her self-imposed ‘banned’ track to be none other than her debut track ID: Peace B saying, “I’m still embarrassed of the ‘Chuka-chuka-chu’ part in the lyrics.”

She touched upon her romance life saying, “I’ve usually dated during my rest periods in between activities,” and shared she usually she dated through phone calls or text messaging. Asked about her most recent date, the singer revealed it had been at least 2 to 3 years, and the other person was a celebrity.
