"Make Your Move" standie in Thailand

As a BoA fan in Thailand, there haven't been that many occasions where we feel blessed by BoA activities, goodies, etc. Actually BoA's only performed here once in an SMTOWN concert. So I was shocked to learn that BoA's first movie would premiere here first in Asia! Seriously we Thais are so spoiled, more often that not, we'd get movies in theatres faster than anywhere else on earth. :P

I saw the movie in 3D yesterday and plan to see the 2D version tomorrow. The experience was so surreal. BoA was speaking, acting, dancing in that big screen right in front of me. And that alone is enough for me. The movie could suck in every aspect, but I'd still enjoy it just the same, with a stupid grin plastered on my face throughout.

I'm writing this post upon a request by usako, a fellow BoA fan. I didn't know what to write about as I suspect everyone who visits my blog is a hardcore BoA fan and for creatures like us, it doesn't really matter how the movie turned out to be. BoA's adorable in it, she dances to stunning choreography by NAPPYTABS, she plays the drums cutely, and she smiles while talking and dancing. What more do you need? Touching story? Solid acting? Smart dialogs? Innovative ideas? Creative plot twists? Smooth editing? Look elsewhere then! LOL!



Not to say the movie is terrible though. It's nowhere near perfect but it's entertaining enough. I have to admit I wouldn't care about it if BoA wasn't in it though. I didn't care about tap and taiko before the movie. After the movie, I still don't care. Personally, I'd have liked it better if BoA did pure hiphop instead of this tap dance thing.

The plot is nothing impressive either. The conflict between Kaz(Aya's bro) and Nick(Donny's bro) doesn't even feel real. After the movie, I still couldn't figure out what the heck happened to them. Why such drama? The deal with Michael and Kaz pimping out his lil baby sister should be limited to asian melodramas only. It doesn't fit to be in a 2013 multi-racial Hollywood dance flick, you know?

The Romeo-Juliet premise itself doesn't work well in this age and time. Like who thinks it's such a big obstacle your brother is opposed to the idea of you dating someone? At least, please make the obstacle relevant enough like maybe why not let Nick kill their father. Oops now that's really an asian melodrama plot. :P

I see no point of continuing this negativity any further. You must know by now I'm not a fan of the story. I enjoy it a lot though. I'm grateful BoA's in it. I enjoy the movie a lot and enjoy every second BoA's on screen. I like her character. I love when she performs. I love the song "Let me in". It's such a beautiful song. I love all her couple dances with Derek Hough. The choreographies are amazing. I love how she speaks three languages in the movie. And I do think her American debut was so worth it just to land this Aya role alone. BoA will get more exposure and gain a lot of fans from this film. She shines through it. Some have even said she was the best thing in the film and I agree!

Now, to let you have an idea of how MYM is treated in Thailand, let me tell you first there are 2 major cinema chains in Thailand, SFCinema and MajorCineplex. Here're what their main pages look like now.

As you can see, even though MYM is not the biggest crowd drawer of the week, it's still featured as the highlight of the week in both theatre chains and that's saying something. Average movie goers here don't even know MYM is an indie movie. It's promoted as some kind of "Step Up" successor. :P

I've read feedbacks in twitter and most of them are favourable. Most of the more lengthy reviews (posted in discussion board) rate the movie as mediocre while one butchered the movie. Not a surprise there. Tap dance and drums must have been a turnoff for many. If you're not a fan of the leads, and if you're not charmed by BoA (and/or Derek) while watching, there's little the movie can offer. To me, the movie is carried by the charms of the leads alone (by that, I mean their dances too).

I'm more than content with the movie. I was happy watching and I was happy when I left the cinema. The ending is spectacular (albeit a bit lazy in writing) and will blow you away. One must be a very grumpy person to leave the theatre unhappy after such a feel good ending. :P
